My Accidental Journey

I've been writing since childhood. Everything from short stories, full length novels, screenplays and even poetry. I wrote because I loved it and it was also a means of escaping. I was horribly, painfully introverted. My stories allowed me to be whoever I wanted to be.

My secret dream was to be an author, but I never thought it would be possible. I  knew how hard it was to 'get published' so I didn't even bother to submit any of my work to a traditional publishing house.

It was an accidental journey to becoming a full time, published author. I tell people that I didn't do it on purpose, even though it was a lifelong dream.

It started out as a whim of sorts. I wanted to give my mother a Kindle for her birthday. I thought it would be a hoot if when she turned the Kindle on for the first time, the first book she saw would be something I had written. And so it began.

I would get up at 3:30 every morning just to write. At the time, we only had one computer in the house so very early morning hours were my only opportunity to write. My husband thought I was getting up early to play Farmville!

I shared a few chapters with a very dear friend of mine, thinking she'd say "Cute. But don't give up your day job." I was floored when she emailed me back and said, "Where is the rest of it?? I want to read more!" I thought she was just being nice.

Somewhere along the way, my husband had discovered my little book on the computer. I had to come clean and explain to him what I was doing. I also asked him for help.  I'm not a technical person, but I figured there had to be a way to get my book onto Mamma's Kindle. Now, anyone who knows my husband knows what a research nut he is. Give him the most obscure or offbeat or technical idea or question and he'll research the heck out of it! I had explained to him that I had seen a link at Amazon that said "Publish Your Book To Kindle," but that I hadn't bothered with it. I was convinced that all I needed was a 'cord' of some sort to hook up between my computer and Mamma's Kindle.

A few days later, my husband informed me that I couldn't just put my book on mom's Kindle. I had to actually publish it. I believed him. He's smart, this husband of mine, and he'd never lied to me before.

I figured what the heck, go for it. What did I have to lose? No one would want to buy my book anyway. Now, deep down I had a secret desire to actually sell a copy, but I wouldn't speak the words out loud. I thought it would be wonderful if I sold just ten little copies. In my lifetime. Ten. That was a good goal.

Without the aid of an editor or cover artist and not having a clue what I was doing, I decided to go for it. I figured that I didn't want to wake up on my 60th birthday and wonder what if....  So In December of 2011 I published Laiden's Daughter.

By February of 2012, it was number 2 on Amazon's Top 100 Best Seller's List! Blew. My. Mind. I thought it would take a lifetime to sell ten copies. I was certain it had to be a mistake of some kind. But when I started getting one message after another, one positive review after another, I realized it wasn't a mistake....I was now an author.

I was selling more than 250 copies a day! I didn't have a clue what that meant, if in fact it meant anything at all. All that I knew was that I was over-the-moon happy and people were asking for more!

I remember my first royalty check from Amazon/KDP. $78.69. I cried because I felt like I had arrived. By October of 2012, I was able to give up my day job (selling insurance) in order to write full time. That still blows my mind. I am able to do things now that would not have been possible prior to December of 2011. I have the most amazing life.

In all honesty, it has never been about the money; its always been about the writing. Are my books perfection personified? Hardly. But I do know that my writing gets better with each new book -- and that is how it should be. I want to write stories that people will enjoy. I want to help people escape the ordinary, for just a little while.

Now, I have a beautiful editor, a very talented cover artist, and other indie authors who are very dear friends. I even have a street team! Suzan's Highland Lassies. This is a group of beautiful, sweet and smart women who I consider dear friends. I couldn't get through a book launching without them!

I also believe I have the most beautiful readers anywhere. I know that I would not be where I am today if it were not for them.

So there you have it. I'm proof that dreams can come true and that happily-ever-afters are real.

Kimi's Review

Lets just start out with what you want to know, YES this is an awesome book. Well done and great story line. Now for the rest of you. Action, Love, twists and turns. Once you start reading you will not stop. It is the amazing end to this great trilogy. I wanted to keep reading but knew the end would come. I hated to leave this book. I want to go back and reread it just to feel the emotions I had through this book.

You think you know whats going on, then you realize you don't and just sit back for the ride. Enjoy it because I tell you now Rhos is fricken HAWT, Possessive, and very protective of what is his. Heather is just as she always is. Honest, sweet and always there with a smile and a helping hand. I love that the other sisters are in this book and she ties up everything nicely.

This book will stay with you long after you are done reading it.

Book Synopsis

Heather woke with a start, her heart beating wildly and her body chilled. It took her a moment to realize that she was home in the safety of her bedchamber and tucked comfortably in her bed. It had been two days since her return home and she had yet to feel completely safe and protected. She had woken the last two mornings, thinking she was still hiding in the woods from the ghost warriors while trying to make her way home. Her biggest fear had been that she would come face to face with her abductor—the Dark Dragon.
She shivered at the mere thought of his name and pulled the soft wool blanket up to her neck. Why the infamous warrior had had her abducted was still a question that haunted Heather and perhaps continued to be the cause of her unease. He abducted her once, would he not try again?
Heather shook her head. Lying abed would not solve her problems or ease her worries. However, her chores would provide a good reprieve from both. She hurried out of bed and slipped on her pale yellow linen shift, followed by her drab green tunic and snatched up her brown leather boots near the fireplace to pull on and strap quickly. She ran her fingers through her soft blond hair, letting the natural waves fall where they may until she collected her four bone combs off the chest by the bed and with deft hands secured her long strands atop her head, though a few stubborn ones broke free and fell along the back of her neck.
After taking her cloak from the peg by the door, she sighed as she rested her hand on the latch. She was home and she was safe, nothing would change that. She had her family to protect her. She could return to her daily life and everything would be fine.
Heather opened the door and as she stepped out of the room a little voice whispered in head, “nothing is the same nor ever will be again.”
Another shiver ran through her and she hurried down the stairs and into the Great Hall. It was so early that the servants were yet about. It did not matter to her, for she was not hungry. What she wanted most was to walk through the village while it stirred awake and feel its peacefulness like she had done endless times before. Maybe then she would finally feel that all was good.
She draped her cloak over her shoulders and stepped outside. The pre-dawn light sparked on the horizon and Heather was thrilled that she had not missed the sunrise. She hurried along to reach her favorite spot on a small rise and watched as the sun rose like a fiery magic ball from the depths of the earth.
Heather’s smile grew as the sun inched its way up, spreading its glorious light across the land. She recalled all the mornings she had stood here watching the sunrise and how happy she had been then and she wished she could feel that same happiness now.
Patience, Emma, and she had finally been reunited, and she was happy that her sisters were both wed to two men they loved and who loved them. And even more exciting news was that she was to be an aunt. Emma was with child and when the time came Heather would be right there to deliver the babe and see her sister safe. She was also thrilled that her da was feeling so much better and also looked so much better than he had in months. And though there was a chance of war with Patience’s husband’s family, the Clan McLaud, they would face the threat together as they had done before when a clan war loomed on the horizon.
With lightness in her heart, she had not felt since being abducted, Heather turned to walk down the small rise, eager to start the day, eager to begin life anew. She stopped when something caught at the corner of her eye and she turned to look out on the rise just beyond the village.
Her heart slammed in her chest and fear froze her in place.
There, spread across the rise, atop their horses were the Dark Dragon’s infamous ghost warriors, their faces painted white, and in the lead draped in black and astride a black horse sat the Dark Dragon.

Me  Tell us about yourself

Mary: I’m someone who spends most of my waking moments creating stories. Thank goodness, my husband of 32 years helps to bring me back down to earth, or I would be wandering the stars within my mind. I have three grown children and five grandchildren—I adore them all! Gardening is one of my favorite hobbies, along with cooking. Both of these help to unwind me after a long day of writing.

Me Tell us about your new book

Mary: Dragon Knight’s Axe is the third book in the Order of the Dragon Knights series. This is the story of Alastair MacKay. He was the most tortured, haunted brother of the four, and I loved writing his story. He drinks far too much mead, and is the daredevil of the group. It took a strong woman like Fiona to be able to stand beside him and love both—the man and the beast. In this book, the journey begins in Ireland, so it brought back fond memories of my first visit there.

Me What made you want to write and what made you want to write the genre you are writing?

Mary: I have been writing since I was a little girl—penning poems in my diaries, to writing plays for my family. Yet, when I became an adult, those dreams got pushed aside. It wasn’t until much later in life that the longing to create stories started to emerge. I’m a huge fan of the paranormal genre, especially fae, druids, and all things Celtic. It was only natural that I would imagine a world of Scottish fae warriors. You’re not limited by the modern world. It’s your realm to create anything!

Me: What people do you most admire?

Alastair: Fiona. I would not be here speaking with ye, if not for her love. Then, there are my brothers, as well.

Me: What, if anything, would you like to change about your life?

Alastair: Meggie’s death haunts me daily, and there are times I long to return to that night—to right the wrong. Yet, I cannae undo what has been written, for the Fates would then have altered my meeting Fiona. Therefore, I seek not to change the threads of my life.

Me: What are your strongest/weakest traits?

Alastair: (Leans forward in his chair, placing his fists on the table) ’Tis not wise to declare this knowledge of myself.

 

Me: What are your fears?

Alastair: I have only one—losing Fiona.

Me: Most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you?

Alastair: (Leans back and crosses his arms over chest) There has been none.

Me: What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

Alastair: I have been told I lack patience. Mayhap, this is a trait I should strive to overcome.

Me: What is your motto?

Alastair: Live for today, for death will surely come to claim ye.

He would get the truth out of her. She was now his. Bought and paid for.

His anger simmered just below the surface, and he allowed his eyes to flash with the fire of the dragon. Hearing her gasp, he smiled. Good, little bird. Fear me. Without giving her time to react, he swept her up and dumped her over his left shoulder, and strode to the ship.

He heard her sharp intake of breath, and then she started to pound against his back. “Put...me down,” she demanded.

“Nae.”

She started to kick, and he clenched his jaw in frustration. The little bird had talons. He responded with a smack to her bottom, but instead of removing his hand, he kept it against her soft curves. “I will put ye down when we are on my ship.”

She went completely still, and then she screamed.

Alastair dumped her onto the ground. “For the love of Brigid, did ye have to yell into my ear?”

Fiona rubbed at her bottom and then stood. “You beast,” she spat out at him. Jumping onto a nearby boulder, she looked directly into his eyes. “Don’t you ever touch me like that again.”

Alastair yanked her to his chest by her arms, his face mere inches from hers. “And what are ye going to do?” He watched as her eyes widened in alarm. Blue eyes that reminded him of the sky on warm summer days. Then his gaze traveled down to her lips, red as berries.

Instantly, his beast roared to life. Claim one kiss, Alastair.

“I will slit your throat,” she whispered.

Releasing his hold, his beast laughed, mocking him. He stared at her for a few moments before turning away. Stalking over to the ship, he climbed up the ladder.

I am a constant daydreamer and have been told quite often to remove my head from the clouds. Yet, this is where I find the magic to write my stories. Not only do I love to weave a good tale, but I have a voracious appetite for reading. I worked for Borders Books for almost fourteen years. I loved it, from the beginning to the end you kept me on my toes. There were a few times that I had to walk away from the book. I was so irritated with it. The emotions that this book brings out is amazing. I couldn’t stop from wanting more. Wanting so badly to reach in and knock some sense into both of them. If she had not made the emotions in me so great in the beginning/middle I do not think the end would have been so profound. Seems a bit darker than the last but with this Hero it was needed. Would I want you to change anything in this book. No, any change would also change the feeling you have reading it. Every emotion you have through the book is necessary for the end. The Burst of emotions, it is almost overwhelming.

You get enough action, love, banter, excitement, and fighting to keep you reading. This book will be in your mind long after you have finished reading it. I feel the need to re-read it. Just to go through everything you feel in this book again. It is mystery, redemption, and new love all rolled into one awesome story.
